The
Lexicon Project was started by three products of the Fayette
County Public Education system in the fall of 2004. We are
David Schankula, Jonathan Rodgers and Marcie Crim. The wisdom
of photographer, skater and longtime Lexingtonian Richie
Wireman was added soon after.
This
Project is a one year photographic documentation of
Lexington, KY--that year is now, 2005.
The
Project is not meant as a work of art and, for the most part,
we do not consider ourselves photographers. The photographs
are simply a means to an end.
Lexington
is a city of 300,000 people--and yet, where are those 300,000
people? Better still, who are they? If we have chosen
to live in this city then quite simply we have chosen
to live together.
The
Lexicon Project is an attempt to discover community, enrich
community and embrace community. It is a conversation.
It is a good excuse to meet new people and to test our own
predispositions.
We
have chosen to conduct this conversation through the disarming
art of photography. But why photography?
Because there were too many newspapers in town and we
don't have enough money to buy a television station.
That
said, we do know a thing or two about photography. We have
chemical stains on our walls to prove it.
By
the end of this year, our portrait of Lexington will consist
of 365 images. Throughout the year we will
be hanging photographs in the publicly viewable windows of
Lexington's homes and businesses.
The
Lexicon Project is an open-source initiative and all
are welcome to participate. In fact, there are many
different ways you can take part: GET
INVOLVED.
If you have questions about The Lexicon Project, feel free
to send
us an email and we will answer them in
this space.
